16世紀にドイツ語のHolster（皮の鞘・覆い）から英語に入りました。ゲルマン語のhul-（覆う・包む）が語根で、ケースを意味する接辞が付いています。同族語にhull（外皮）があり、「武器をすっぽり覆って保護する革袋」という当初の姿がそのまま名前に定着しました。

The word belongs to a Germanic group associated with coverings or containers, though its more distant formation is not fully certain. Early holsters were commonly leather cases fitted to a saddle for carrying pistols.
