古英語 host（主人・客をもてなす者）はラテン語 hospes（客・主人）に由来。hospitality（もてなし）や hospital と同根。「客をもてなす」から「サービスや場所を提供する」へ広がり、ITではサーバーを提供してサイトを預かる hosting（ホスティング）を表す。
