hyssop の語源・成り立ち Etymology
hyssop は古英語 ysope を経て、ラテン語 hyssopus、ギリシャ語 hyssopos、さらにヘブライ語 ezov にさかのぼる語。清めの儀礼に使う草の名がそのまま入ったため、薬草名でありつつ「浄化」の響きを帯びる。関連語は Hyssopus。
Hyssop came into English through Latin and Greek, but it ultimately goes back to Hebrew ezov. It was the name of a plant used in cleansing and religious rituals. Because of that history, the word kept not only a plant meaning but also an old association with purification.
