礼儀や社会規範、道徳に反する不適切な行為や振る舞いを指す名詞。単なる違法行為だけでなく、場にそぐわない言動、非礼、品位を欠くふるまいなどを広く表す。法的な不正そのものより、礼節や適正を欠くことに重点がある語。
Impropriety is behavior that is rude, morally wrong, or not suitable for a particular social or professional situation. It is often used when talking about actions that break accepted rules of politeness, honesty, or proper conduct.

im-（否定）+ proper（固有の・ふさわしい）+ -iety から成る。核のラテン語 proprius は「自分自身のもの」で、本来その場に属する振る舞いから外れることが impropriety、つまり不適切さになる。proper や property も同根。
Impropriety is built from im- "not" and propriety, which comes from Latin proprius, meaning "one's own" or "proper." From that idea, proper behavior meant conduct that fits its place or situation. Impropriety therefore came to mean behavior that does not fit, and it is related to English words like proper and property.
