情報を追加するときや同じ話題に別の要素を加えたいときに、前置詞句として使う。書き言葉でも話し言葉でも使いやすく、「さらに」「その上」と訳される。

additionはラテン語additio（加えること）から、ad-（～へ）＋dare（与える）の過去分詞additus が語根。add、additiveも同根。in additionは「付加の中に→さらに加えて」が原義で、情報を追加する接続表現として定着した。
