insomniac は insomnia + -ac。insomnia はラテン語 in-「〜でない」+ somnus「眠り」にさかのぼり、文字どおり「眠りがない」状態です。somnolent, insomnia も同根で、眠れない人をそのまま insomniac と呼ぶ感覚がつかめます。
