足の甲、つまり足の上部で足指の付け根から足首までの部分。靴ではその部分に対応する内側の部分を指す。

instep は古英語系で、in「内側」＋ step/stæpe「踏む・足」に結びつく語です。step や footstep と同根で、足を踏み出す働きに関わる盛り上がった上部だから「甲」と理解できます。
