leaver は leave「去る、残して離れる」に -er が付いた語で、文字通り「その場を去る人」です。leave は古英語 lǣfan「残す」にさかのぼり、「後に残して立ち去る」という感覚から「退職者・離脱者」の意味が自然に生まれました。関連語は leave、leftover です。
Leaver is formed from leave + -er, meaning "a person who leaves." Leave goes back to Old English laefan or lefan, with the older sense of "leave behind" or "let remain."
