Memory Tip
Investing is invest plus -ing, with no spelling change. As a gerund, it focuses on the activity of putting resources into something now in the hope of a future return. Learn the pattern investing in a business, company, or fund, and remember that the resource can also be time or effort. Investing always involves uncertainty, so risk is part of the usual context. Contrast it with investment: investment can mean the money, asset, or individual commitment itself, while investing usually names the broader action or practice.

Etymology
ラテン語 investire(衣服を着せる)が語源で、in-(中に)+ vestire(着せる)から成る。 関連語:vest(ベスト、権限を与える)、divest(剥奪する)。
Investing is formed by adding -ing to invest. Invest ultimately comes from Latin investire, “to clothe,” built from in- and vestire, “to dress.” The word developed a figurative sense of clothing someone with authority or placing them in possession of an office. From the idea of placing or committing something, it later acquired the financial meaning of putting capital into an enterprise or asset in expectation of a return.
