karaoke の語源・成り立ち Etymology
日本語の「空(から)」+「オーケストラ」の短縮形が語源。歌のないオーケストラ伴奏=「空のオーケストラ」という造語。1970年代に日本で発明され、そのまま英語に借用された。英語圏では /ˌkæriˈoʊki/ と発音が変化している点が興味深い。
Karaoke was borrowed directly from Japanese. The Japanese term joins kara, meaning “empty,” with oke, a shortened form of ōkesutora, itself borrowed from English orchestra. It originally described recorded musical accompaniment without a live lead singer. The entertainment developed in Japan in the twentieth century and spread internationally, with the Japanese spelling retained but its pronunciation adapted to the sound patterns of English and other languages.
