「ketchup」は、トマトを主原料に、酢、砂糖、塩、スパイスなどを加えて作られた濃厚なソースです。ハンバーガーやフライドポテト、ホットドッグなどに広くかけられる調味料として、世界中で愛用されています。元々は東南アジアの魚醤が起源とされており、英語圏に広まる過程でトマトが主成分になりました。

Ketchup entered English in the late seventeenth century as a name for an Asian savory sauce, probably through a Malay form such as kecap and ultimately connected with a word used in southern Chinese varieties for a fermented sauce. Early British recipes contained ingredients such as fish, mushrooms, or nuts rather than tomatoes. Tomato ketchup developed later and became especially prominent in the United States during the nineteenth century. Catsup arose as an alternative English spelling.
