Kimberlite is a type of volcanic rock that comes from very deep inside the earth. It is especially important in geology and mining because it often carries diamonds to the surface.

kimberlite の語源・成り立ち Etymology
kimberliteは南アフリカの地名Kimberleyに、鉱物・岩石名で多い- lite（ギリシャ語lithos「石」系）を付けた語です。monolithやlithographと同じlith-が見えます。つまり「キンバーリーで知られる石」で、ダイヤモンド母岩の名になりました。
Kimberlite is named after Kimberley in South Africa, with the rock-name ending -lite, from Greek lithos meaning "stone." So the word originally meant, in effect, "the stone associated with Kimberley." The same lith- root appears in English words like monolith and lithograph.
