A pommel is the rounded end of a sword handle, or the raised front part of a saddle. The exact meaning depends on the object being discussed, but in both cases it refers to a shaped end or front part.

まず pommel horse（鞍馬）で覚えると入りやすい語です。体操では“馬の上に突き出た取っ手”を指し、剣では“柄のいちばん端の丸い出っ張り”を指します。場面は違っても、『手で握る道具の上や端にある、丸く盛り上がった部分』という共通イメージでまとめると残りやすいです。名詞として sword pommel のように出やすく、つづりが近い pummel（何度も殴る）とは別語なので混同注意。
To remember `pommel`, place it at the end of a sword: `blade`, `guard`, `hilt`, then `pommel` at the very tip of the handle. The image of a round knob or weighted end is the best memory hook. Also keep it separate from `pummel`, which is a completely different word.
