pummel は pommel の変形で、古フランス語 pomel、さらに中世ラテン語 pomellum「丸いこぶ・柄頭」にさかのぼる。語源にはラテン語 pomum「リンゴ」があり、pommel horse も同根。『丸い突起で打つ』像が、何度も殴る意味へ育った。
Pummel is a later form of pommel. Pommel came from Old French pomel and Medieval Latin pomellum, a word for a rounded knob, from Latin pomum, "apple," because of its round shape. The sense seems to have moved from striking with something knob-like to hitting again and again; pommel horse is from the same root.
