Etymology
The currency name kina comes from a Tok Pisin name for the gold-lip pearl shell. Such shells were traditionally valued in parts of the Papua New Guinea Highlands and were used in trade, ceremonial exchange, and bride-price payments. When Papua New Guinea introduced its national currency in 1975, the culturally significant shell name was adopted for the main unit, while the smaller unit was named the toea.
