kirsch はドイツ語 Kirschwasser の短縮形で、Kirsch は「サクランボ」を表す。さらにさかのぼるとラテン語 cerasum 系で、果実名がそのまま蒸留酒名になった語だと分かる。cherry や cerise も同系。
Kirsch is shortened from German Kirschwasser, literally "cherry water." Kirsch means "cherry" in German and ultimately goes back to the same source as English cherry, from Latin cerasum. The fruit name was later used for the drink made from it.
