To empathise means to understand and share another person's feelings. It is used when you emotionally connect with what someone else is experiencing. This word is close to sympathise, but it suggests a deeper sense of understanding from their point of view.

empathy（共感）をそのまま動詞にした形だと見ると覚えやすいです。まず名詞 empathy を軸に置き、「相手の気持ちを自分ごとのように理解する」という動作が empathise。よく empathise with 人 の形で使います。understand が頭で理解する感じなのに対し、empathise は感情面まで寄り添う語。似た sympathise with は「気の毒に思う・同情する」に寄りやすいので区別すると記憶に残ります。英式の empathise と米式の empathize の綴り差にも注意。
