lacrosse はカナダ・フランス語 jeu de la crosse「曲がった棒の遊び」から来た語。crosse は「鉤形の杖・曲がった棒」を表し、競技名が道具の形そのものから付いたので、「棒を使う球技」だと意味がつかめる。関連語は crook, crozier。
English borrowed lacrosse from Canadian French jeu de la crosse, literally “game of the curved stick.” French crosse referred to a hooked or curved staff, including a bishop’s crozier, and the sport was named for its characteristic implement. The English name was applied to Indigenous North American stick-and-ball games encountered by French-speaking settlers, although those games and their traditions long predated the European term.
