解説 Definition
服や素材、情報などを順に重ね、複数の層を作る動作を表します。layer の -ing 形で、名詞的に「重ねること」という過程を表す場合もあります。
Layering is the act or process of placing clothes, materials, substances, or information in successive levels or one over another. As the present participle of layer, it describes someone or something actively creating such an arrangement.
使い方 Usage
- be layering ＋ 重ねる物で「〜を重ねている」。服や食材など、層にする物を目的語に置く。 Use be layering followed by the things being arranged in layers. Clothes, ingredients, and other materials can be the object.
- layer A over B は「Bの上にAを重ねる」。layer A with B は「AとBを交互に重ねて層にする」。 Layer A over B means place A in a layer above B. Layer A with B means arrange A and B in alternating layers.
- 動名詞としては「重ねること」を表し、文の主語にもなる。進行形の be layering は重ねている最中の動作を表す。 As a gerund, layering means the act of creating layers and can be a sentence subject. The progressive form be layering describes that action in progress.

layering の語源・成り立ち Etymology
layering は layer＋-ing。layer は lay「置く」（古英語 lecgan）に、もの・人を表す -er が付いた語で、そこから「層」という意味が育った。つまり layering は「置いて重ね、層にしていくこと」で、layout や underlay と同じ“置く”感覚が土台にある。
Layering is formed from layer and the participial or gerund suffix -ing. Layer developed from the verb lay, from Old English lecgan, with the agent or noun-forming ending -er; it originally referred to something laid down or to a person who lays things. From the sense of material placed in a level came the noun “layer” and then the verb meaning “arrange in layers.” Layering names or describes that continuing process.
