そうならないように

解説 Definition

lest は、避けたい事態や心配される事態を導く硬い接続詞で、「〜しないように」「〜するといけないから」という意味です。通常、lest の後には主語と動詞の原形、または should を用いた節が続きます。

A formal conjunction introducing an undesirable event that someone wants to prevent or is worried might happen. It means roughly “so that this will not happen” or “for fear that,” and is followed by a clause.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

lest は「望ましくないことが起きないように」を導く硬めの接続詞です。Take an umbrella lest it rain. のように、予防行動の後へ悪い可能性を置きます。古い less と同系の形から発達した語で、現代英語では for fear that や so that ... not に近いと覚えます。lest の後では正式な用法で動詞原形や should が使われ、否定語 not は普通加えません。

Use lest to introduce the bad result that a precaution is meant to prevent. In “Take an umbrella lest it rain,” taking the umbrella is the action, and rain is the feared possibility. This makes lest close to “for fear that” or “so that ... not,” though it sounds more formal or literary. Because the negative idea is already built into lest, English normally does not add not after it. Formal constructions often use a plain verb or should: lest anyone forget; lest the system should fail.

lest の語源・成り立ち Etymology

lest は古英語 þy læs þe「そうならぬように、より少なくなるように」が縮まってできた語です。læs は less と同根で、「悪い結果が少なくなるように」という発想から「そうならないように」を表します。関連語は less、least です。

Lest developed from an Old English expression represented by forms such as þȳ læs þe, literally involving the idea “whereby less” and used to introduce something to be avoided. Its central element is related to less and least. Over time, the longer expression contracted and became the conjunction lest, with the specialized meaning “for fear that” or “to prevent the possibility that.”
