caller は基礎語 call を軸に覚えるのが最短です。call が「電話する」、-er が「その動作をする人」なので、teacher や writer と同じ作りで「電話をかける人」→「電話の発信者」と取れます。電話では caller ID, the caller said ..., first caller などの形でよく見ます。receiver は受ける側、caller は電話を始めた側と区別しましょう。

callerはcall「呼ぶ」＋-er「…する人」。callは古ノルド語kalla「大声で呼ぶ」にさかのぼり、-erは古英語系の行為者語尾です。もともと「呼びかける人」なので、電話では自然に「発信者」となり、recallやcallingも同根です。
Caller is formed from call and the agent ending -er. Call comes from Old Norse kalla, meaning to cry out or summon in a loud voice. So the word first meant a person who calls out, and later it was naturally used for someone making a telephone call. Related words include calling and recall.
