letdown は古英語系 let「下ろす・許す」と down「下へ」から成る英語の複合語で、もとは文字通り「下に降ろす」ことでした。outlet や letup にも同じ let が見え、期待を落とされる感覚がそのまま「がっかり」になったと分かります。
Letdown is a native English compound made from let and down. It first had the literal sense of lowering something, using let in its older sense "to allow to go down" or "release." From that physical image, English later developed the emotional sense of hopes being lowered.
