anticlimax は anti-「逆の・反対の」と climax から成り、climax はギリシャ語 klimax「はしご」に由来します。もとは話が段々上がる「はしご」の比喩なので、その逆の anticlimax は「盛り上がるはずが急に落ちる」こと、つまり「期待外れ」です。関連語は climax、climactic です。
