「borage」は古フランス語bouracheを経て中世ラテン語boragoにさかのぼる薬草名で、語源はアラビア語abu rash「汗の父」説が有力。Boragoやboraginaceousも同根で、発汗を促す薬草として重視された用途が、そのまま名に刻まれているとわかる。
Borage came into English through Old French bourache, from Medieval Latin borago, the name of the herb. Its deeper origin is uncertain, but many scholars connect it to Arabic abu rash, often understood as "father of sweat." That fits the plant's old medical use as something thought to promote sweating.
