フランスの Limousin（リムーザン）地方に由来。この地方の羊飼いが着ていたフード付きマントに似た覆い付き馬車が limousine と呼ばれ、やがて運転席と客室が仕切られた高級車を指すようになった。地名が車種名になった珍しい例。
