イタリア語 sedia「椅子」や、その奥のラテン語 sedere「座る」にさかのぼる語です。もとは人を座らせて運ぶ sedan chair を指し、sedentary や session と同じく「座る」感覚が自動車名にも残っています。
The vehicle name comes from sedan chair, an enclosed chair in which a passenger sat while being carried. The deeper history is associated with Italian sedia, “chair,” and ultimately Latin sedere, “to sit.” Thus, the word developed from the idea of transporting a seated person before being applied to a type of enclosed automobile. Words such as sedentary and session share the broader Latin association with sitting.
