Loudness is how loud a sound seems to a person who hears it. It is commonly used when talking about music, noise, and audio equipment, and it focuses on human hearing rather than only physical sound power.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
loud を知っていれば土台は十分。loud は「耳に大きく響く」、-ness は「その性質・程度」なので、loudness は「どれくらい loud か」= 音の大きさ。loudly は「大きな音で」、aloud は「声に出して」なので混同しないこと。volume と近いが、volume が機器のつまみや設定値にも使われるのに対し、loudness は実際に聞こえる大きさの感覚を言いやすい。increase/reduce loudness, perceived loudness までまとめて覚えると使える語になる。

loudnessはloud+名詞化の-nessから成り、loudは古英語hlud「大きく響く」にさかのぼります。aloudやloudlyも同根で、ただ大きいのでなく「音が外へ強く響いている度合い」だと見ると、音量の感覚がつかめます。
