The name Lyon developed from Latin Lugdunum, the Roman name of the settlement. This Celtic place name is traditionally analyzed as containing Lugus, the name of a deity associated with light, and dunum, meaning a fortified place or hill. Through centuries of sound and spelling change in French, Lugdunum eventually became Lyon. The city was an important center of Roman Gaul.
