The modern country adopted the name Mali from the medieval Mali Empire, which flourished in West Africa from roughly the thirteenth to the sixteenth century. The empire is especially associated with Mansa Musa and the trans-Saharan gold trade. The name’s earlier meaning in Mande languages is not securely established. Explanations connecting it with a word for “hippopotamus” or with a royal residence are reported, but they should be treated as uncertain rather than as settled derivations.
