manticore はギリシャ語 mantikhoras、ラテン語 mantichora を経て英語に入った語で、さらに古代ペルシア語の「人を食うもの」にさかのぼります。martiya「人」+ xvar-「食べる」と考えられ、名前そのものが“人食い怪物”を表すので、意味と姿の恐ろしさが直結しています。
Manticore came into English through Greek mantikhoras and Latin mantichora. It ultimately goes back to an Old Persian expression meaning "man-eater," built from elements meaning "man" and "to eat." The name itself already described a terrifying creature, so the sense changed very little as it passed between languages.
