mapper は map + -er「〜する人」。map は中英語 mappemounde の短縮で、古フランス語 mapamonde、さらにラテン語 mappa mundi「布の上の世界図」に由来するので、もとは「世界を布に描くもの」だった。関連語は map, remap。
Mapper is formed from map and the ending -er, meaning "a person or thing that does." Map comes through Middle English and Old French from Latin mappa mundi, literally "cloth of the world," because early maps were drawn on cloth or sheet-like material.
