Myosin is a protein in muscle cells that helps muscles move and contract. It works together with another protein called actin. This is a scientific word mainly used in biology and medicine.

myosin は筋肉タンパク質名として作られた学術語で、ギリシャ語 mys/myos「筋肉」にタンパク質名の接尾辞 -in が付く。mys は本来「鼠」も意味し、皮下で筋肉が動く様子が鼠のように見えたことに由来する。myology や myocardium と同じく myo- は「筋肉」を表す。
Myosin is a scientific word formed from Greek mys or myos, meaning "muscle," plus the protein ending -in. The Greek word mys could also mean "mouse," probably because moving muscles under the skin looked like mice running underneath. In modern science, the term was created for a protein found in muscle tissue. Myology and myocardium use the same myo- root.
