「mastering」は、技術や学問などを完全に習得・マスターする行為を表す動詞の現在分詞形として使われます。また、音楽業界では録音した音源を最終的に調整・最適化して完成品にする工程（マスタリング）としても専門的に使われます。何かを自在に操れるレベルまで極めることを意味します。

古フランス語maistre（主人）を経てラテン語magister（指導者・長）に由来。語根magis（より大きい）から「上に立つ者」の意。関連語はmaster（主人）、magistrate（行政官）。技術を完全に支配する＝習得するという意味に発展した。
Mastering is formed by adding -ing to master. Master entered English through Old English and Old French forms associated with Latin magister, meaning a chief, teacher, or person in authority. Magister is related to magis, “more” or “greater.” From the noun meaning a person in command, master developed a verb meaning to gain control of or become highly skilled in something, and later acquired its specialized audio-production sense.
