ベッドの上に敷く厚くて弾力がある寝具で、体重を分散して身体を支える役割を果たす。素材や硬さで寝心地が変わるので、自分に合うものを選ぶのが大切だ。

mattress はアラビア語 matrah「投げ下ろす場所」にさかのぼり、語源には「地面に敷いて身を投げ出す寝床」の感覚がある。英語の中で分解しにくい語だが、仏語 matelas や伊語 materasso も同根で、ふわふわした物そのものより「横たわる場所」が原義だと見える。
"Mattress" ultimately comes from Arabic `matrah`, meaning a place where something is thrown down. It entered European languages through forms such as French `matelas` and Italian `materasso` before reaching English. The earliest idea was not the soft object itself, but a place spread out for lying down.
