methodology はフランス語 méthodologie／近代ラテン語 methodologia 由来で、method + -logy に分けられます。method はギリシャ語 methodos、つまり meta「追って」+ hodos「道」から来ており、「道筋を追って探る学」が「方法論」になった語です。関連語は method, methodical。
Methodology came into English through French and modern Latin, built from method and -logy. Method comes from Greek methodos, from meta "after" or "following" and hodos "way" or "path." The original idea was a way of pursuing knowledge step by step, which later became the study of methods; method and methodical are related words.
