micro- はギリシャ語 mikros「小さい」、satellite はラテン語 satelles「付き従う者」が語源です。直訳すると「小さな付き従うもの」で、大きな天体の周りを回る小型の衛星だと考えると意味がつかみやすいです。関連語は microscope、satellite。
Microsatellite is formed from micro-, from Greek mikros meaning "small," and satellite, from Latin satelles, meaning "attendant" or "follower." Satellite first referred to something that follows or orbits a larger body, and microsatellite later narrowed this to a very small satellite. The root idea of "small" is shared with microscope.
