解説 Definition
modelling は model（模型を作る、手本にする、モデルをする）からできた形で、名詞として「モデリング」という意味です。特にイギリス英語のつづりで、アメリカ英語では modeling と書くことが多いです。
Modelling is the process of creating or using a simplified, physical, mathematical, or digital representation of an object, design, or system. This spelling is standard in British English; American English usually uses modeling.

modelling の語源・成り立ち Etymology
modellingはmodelに-ingが付いた名詞で、modelはフランス語modelle、イタリア語modelloを経てラテン語modulus「小さな尺度」に由来します。modelやmoduleも同じ流れにあり、『測るための基準・型』が核にあるので、現実を型として表す「モデリング」の意味につながります。
Modelling is formed from model plus -ing, with the doubled l characteristic of standard British spelling. Model entered English through French modèle and Italian modello, ultimately deriving from Latin modulus, “a small measure,” itself related to modus, “measure or manner.” The word developed from a measured pattern or standard to a physical or conceptual representation. Modelling therefore names the activity of constructing, using, or displaying such a representation. American English generally spells the same word modeling.
