Mohican is an English form of the people’s name, commonly connected with a self-designation represented as Muh-he-con-neok and interpreted as “people of the waters that are never still” or “people of the great river,” referring to the Hudson River region. Mahican is another spelling. The form Mohican became widely familiar through James Fenimore Cooper’s novel title The Last of the Mohicans. It was later transferred in British English to the central-strip hairstyle called a Mohawk in American English.
