解説 Definition
ギリシャ神話で、オデュッセウスを魔女キルケーの魔法から守ったとされる、魔力を持つ薬草。後に実在する植物の名にも用いられたが、神話上の草との同一性は不明。
In ancient Greek mythology, a magical herb given to Odysseus as protection against Circe’s enchantments. The name has also been applied later to certain real plants, especially Allium moly, without proving that they are the mythical herb.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
moly はホメロスの物語で、魔女の力からオデュッセウスを守る特別な薬草の名です。日常の herb ではなく、神話に登場する魔法よけの草という場面で覚えましょう。後世には植物名 Allium moly にも用いられますが、神話上の草と現実の植物を同一と断定しないのが大切です。
Picture the scene in Homer’s Odyssey: Odysseus receives moly, a mysterious herb that protects him from Circe’s magic. That protective role is the strongest memory link, because moly is not merely a general word for any herb. The name was later attached to real plants, including Allium moly, but the botanical plant should not automatically be treated as the exact herb described in the myth. Associate moly with a mythological antidote or safeguard rather than with an everyday medicinal plant.

moly の語源・成り立ち Etymology
moly はラテン語 moly を経て、古代ギリシャ語 molu に由来する語で、ホメロスの神話に出る魔法よけの薬草名です。語源そのものは借用語らしく不詳ですが、オデュッセウスを守る特別な草という背景があり、神秘的な意味合いが語に残っています。関連語は Allium moly。
English moly was borrowed through Latin moly from ancient Greek mōly, the name used for the mysterious plant in Homeric tradition. The earlier origin of the Greek word is uncertain, so no dependable literal breakdown should be imposed on it. Later writers and botanists reused the classical name for actual plants, including Allium moly, preserving the ancient spelling and its association with a remarkable herb.
