覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
mote は「ごく小さな一粒」を表し、特に a mote of dust(ほこりの微粒子)でよく使う。dust が集合的な「ほこり」なのに対し、mote は光の筋の中を漂う一粒に焦点を当てる語。窓から差す日光に小さな粒が浮かぶ場面で覚えると定着しやすい。
Picture a beam of sunlight revealing one tiny piece of dust in the air. Dust can refer to the material generally, while a mote focuses on one extremely small particle.
例文
A mote of dust floated in the sunlight.
一粒のほこりが日差しの中を漂っていた。
Tiny motes filled the air.
微粒子が空気中に充満していた。
He noticed a mote on the camera lens.
彼はカメラのレンズについた小さなほこりに気づいた。
mote の語源・成り立ち Etymology
英語の「mote」は古英語「mot(微粒子・塵)」に由来し、ゲルマン祖語に遡る。聖書の「他人の目の中のちり(mote)」の表現で有名。関連語に「moat(堀)」があるが語源は別系統で、極めて小さいものを指す語として定着した。
Mote comes from Old English mot, meaning a tiny particle or piece of dust, and has Germanic roots. It is unrelated to the similarly spelled moat.
