Muscovy duck（バリケン）の名は、ムスク（musk＝麝香）に由来し、雄が持つ麝香のような匂いから。muskはサンスクリット語 muṣká（麝香腺）→ペルシャ語 mushk→ラテン語 muscus と伝わった。muskmelon（マスクメロン）と同根。
