古英語 nēd（「必要、困窮」）に由来し、ゲルマン祖語 *naudi-（「苦難、強制」）にさかのぼる。古ノルド語 nauðr やドイツ語 Not（困窮）と同根。原義は「生存に不可欠な切迫した要求」で、そこから「必要なもの」という名詞用法が発展した。
