覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

need「必要なもの」の複数形で、語末に -s を付け、発音は有声音の後なので /z/ です。一つの必要なら a need、複数の生活条件や要望なら needs。basic needs、the needs of students、meet someone’s needs「人の必要を満たす」という組み合わせで覚えましょう。

Needs is the plural of the noun need, formed by adding -s; the ending is pronounced /z/. Think of one need as one necessary thing, then needs as the collection of conditions or resources required by a person or group. Food and water are “basic needs,” while students or customers may have more specific needs. A highly useful collocation is “meet someone’s needs,” meaning to provide what that person requires. Unlike wants, needs usually suggests that the things are necessary or important for a purpose, not merely desired.

例文

needs の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古英語 nēd(「必要、困窮」)に由来し、ゲルマン祖語 *naudi-(「苦難、強制」)にさかのぼる。古ノルド語 nauðr やドイツ語 Not(困窮)と同根。原義は「生存に不可欠な切迫した要求」で、そこから「必要なもの」という名詞用法が発展した。

Needs is the regular plural of need. Need comes from Old English nēd or nēod, meaning “necessity, compulsion, hardship, or distress,” and is related to other Germanic words expressing constraint or trouble, including German Not. The earlier sense emphasized urgent necessity arising from difficulty. Over time, the noun also came to denote anything required for life, work, comfort, or a particular purpose.
