ラテン語 requirere（再び求める）から古フランス語を経て英語に。接頭辞 re-（再び）＋ quirere（求める）の構成。同根語に acquire（獲得する）、inquire（問い合わせる）がある。「繰り返し求められるもの」が転じて必要条件・要件の意味になった。
Requirements comes from require, which came through Old French from Latin requirere. That Latin verb is built from re- and quaerere, meaning "to seek" or "ask for." The idea of something being repeatedly asked for or demanded developed into the modern sense of necessary conditions. Related words include inquire and acquire.
