馬が出す高い鳴き声。馬が興奮したり、他の馬に呼びかけるときに出す音。

neighは古英語hnǣganにさかのぼる、馬の声をまねた擬音語です。派生語neighingやneighedも同じ音の核を持ち、意味が抽象化せず「ヒヒーン」という響きそのものを語にした語源だと分かります。
Neigh goes back to Old English hnagan or hnaegan and is imitative in origin. It began as a sound-word based on the cry of a horse rather than from an older abstract root. Words like neighing and neighed keep the same sound-based core.
