nickname は本来 ekename で、古英語 eaca「追加」と name から成る「もう一つの名前」でした。an ekename が区切り違いで a nekename と受け取られ、今の形に変化。だから「あだ名」は「追加された名」という発想です。関連語は eke out, name。
