何かを認めたうえでも、それにも関わらず同じ結果や判断が続くことを示す副詞句です。対立する事情を述べたあとで、核心部分を補強したいときに差し込むことで、逆説的なニュアンスを加えます。日常会話にも書き言葉にも使われ、『それでも』という意味に近い強調を持ちます。
None the less means despite that; even so. It is used when something is true although there is another fact that might suggest the opposite. In modern English, the usual spelling is nonetheless, written as one word.

nevertheless を3語に分解した表現で、意味もニュアンスも全く同じ。直訳は「それによって少しへることはない」。「nevertheless の方が少しフォーマル、none the less はやや口語的」という違いがある程度。less（より少ない）を知っていれば、「それ（that＝前文の事情）によって減ることはない」という論理構造が直感的に理解できるはず。日本語の「それでも」同様、逆説の事実を認めた直後に置いて本論を補強するパターンで使う。It was raining. It often comes after a contrast: one fact is true, but the next fact is still true. Remember it as a linking phrase for strong contrast, often at the start of a sentence.

none the lessは「それによって少しも減らない」が直訳。noneは古英語nān（一つもない）、lessは古英語lǣssa（より少ない）から。ゲルマン語系の基本語の組み合わせ。関連語：nevertheless（それにもかかわらず）、lessen（減らす）。「何も減じない→影響を受けない→それでもなお」と意味が発展した。
This phrase is formed from old Germanic words: none from Old English nan and less from Old English laessa. Its original sense was "not any less because of that." From this idea of no reduction or no change, none the less developed the meaning "even so" or "despite that." It is closely related in sense and history to nevertheless.
