「nonfarm」は non-「〜でない」+ farm から成る語です。farm は古フランス語 ferme、ラテン語 firma「定められた賃借料」にさかのぼり、farmer や firm も同系。もとは“借地契約”の語だったので、nonfarm が農業部門の外側を切り分ける語になるわけです。
Nonfarm is built from non-, meaning "not," and farm. Farm came into English through Old French ferme, from Latin firma, which referred to a fixed payment or lease.
