Memory Tip
take a nosedive, go into a nosedive
Picture a plane with its `nose` pointing down as it `dives`. That image makes `nosedive` easy to remember. Then extend that picture to prices, sales, or ratings that fall very fast, not slowly.

Etymology
Nosedive is a modern English compound of nose and dive. It first described an aircraft going down sharply with its nose pointing downward, a very literal image. From that physical movement, it soon gained a figurative meaning for any sudden fall, such as in prices or quality. Related words include dive and nosy.
