orgasm の語源・成り立ち Etymology
orgasm はフランス語 orgasme を経て、ギリシャ語 orgasmos「高ぶり、腫れ上がり」に由来し、動詞 organ「ふくらむ、興奮する」とつながります。もともと「体がふくらむほど高まる」感覚が核で、そこから性的絶頂を表す語になりました。関連語は orgasmic です。
Orgasm entered English through French orgasme and New Latin orgasmus. These forms derive from Greek orgasmos, meaning excitement, swelling, or intense agitation, from organ, “to swell, be excited, or be eager.” Earlier uses could refer more broadly to bodily excitement or violent emotion. Over time, the medical and general English sense narrowed to the culmination of sexual arousal. The adjective orgasmic was subsequently formed from the same base.
