orienting は orient に -ing が付いた形で、語源はラテン語 oriens「昇るもの」、さらに oriri「昇る」。東が太陽の出る方角だったため、向きを定めること全般を表すようになり、origin や orientation にも「立ち現れる点」の感覚が残る。
"Orienting" comes from "orient," which goes back to Latin "oriens," meaning "rising," from a verb meaning "to rise." At first it referred to the east, where the sun rises.
